CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 5 Tar Heels could not regain momentum after dropping the doubles point for only the second time this season as the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers topped North Carolina, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Boar's Head Sports Club. In the last regular season match of the 2007 campaign, the Tar Heels fell to 21-2, 9-2 in conference play, while the Cavaliers improved to 23-3 and a perfect 11-0 in the ACC, earning the ACC regular season title.
The 2007 Tar Heels are the only team in school history to claim more than eight conference regular season wins in a single season. UNC also had the best regular season start at 20-0 since the 1965 squad finished 20-0. This team is also one in a handful of teams that have dropped two or less regular season matches; Sam Paul's 2004 squad was the last team to drop only two when they went 17-2 in regular season action.
The Cavaliers took all three doubles matches despite the competitive play brought by the Tar Heels. At the one spot, the second nationally ranked Cavalier tandem of Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey clinched the doubles point for Virginia with an 8-6 defeat of No. 48 Lenny Gullan and David Stone. Prior to the point-clinching win, Stefan Hardy and Sebastian Guejman fell at the two seed to No. 47 Houston Barrick and Dominic Inglot, 8-4. Virginia swept the North Carolina doubles with a victory at the three seed. Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney dropped an 8-6 decision against Ted Angelinos and Lee Singer.
After Virginia took the doubles point from North Carolina, the Tar Heels faced a tough singles lineup, where the top three positions saw the Cavaliers ranked higher than the Tar Heels. Devvarman, ranked No. 2 in the nation, quickly finished at the one position, posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 63 Benjamin Carlotti. Virginia pushed the match score to one point away from a clinch when Fogleman, at the five seed, fell in straight-sets to Houston Barrick. Freshman Hardy, who hails from Santa Maria, Calif., provided the Tar Heels with their only point in the match. Playing at the three seed, Hardy came back from a deficit in the first set to reclaim the lead and take the set, 6-4. Finding himself down in the second, 2-1, Hardy persevered and claimed the second set the same as the first, 6-4.
The match was clinched at the two seed of play. No. 121 Kearney jumped off to a 3-0 start over No. 22 Treat Huey and took the set, 6-3. However, Huey bounced back in the second, claiming the set, 6-3. The third set was tied three-all before Huey took the lead 4-3 and captured the win, 6-3. The victory at the two seed for Virginia clinched the match at a score of 4-1.
For the third time this season, lone senior Sebastian Guejman retired from play. At the four seed, Guejman dropped the first set To Marko Miklo in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). Guejman led the second set, 3-2, before retiring. The final match of the afternoon, at the six seed, found Will Plyler facing off against Singer. Plyler jumped off to a 4-0 start against Singer, but Singer battled back to draw the score to 5-4 before Plyler triumphed, 6-4. Singer grabbed the second set, 7-5 and swept the third set, 6-0.
This match closes out regular season play for the Tar Heels. Up next, North Carolina begins the 2007 ACC Tournament to be held at the Cary Tennis Center. The Tar Heels are the second seed in the tournament and will play the winner of the NC State vs. Virginia Tech match at 12 noon on Friday.
