
No. 14 Tar Heels Remain Unbeaten With 4-3 Win At Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - North Carolina's 14th-ranked men's tennis team got victories from junior Benjamin Carlotti and freshman Chris Kearney over nationally-ranked singles opponents and junior Karl Wishart scored the clinching victory at No. 6 singles as the Tar Heels defeated Clemson 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
With the win the Tar Heels remained undefeated on the season at 14-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson fell to 19-6 overall and 2-3 in the ACC.
Combined with Friday's 4-3 win at Georgia Tech, UNC has now won its first two road ACC matches for the first time since 1996 when the Heels finished with a 4-0 ACC road record.
The Tar Heels and the Tigers competed in a razor tight doubles point with the Tar Heels clinched with a 9-8 win at No. 1 by Lenny Gullan and David Stone over No. 24-ranked Clement Reix and Ryan Young. UNC's other win in doubles came at No. 3 where Chris Kearney and Taylor Fogleman improved to 13-0 on the season with an 8-4 win over Rok Bizjak and Carlos Alvarez.
The Tar Heels then won three of the six singles matches, including two of the three that went three sets. At No. 1, 46th-ranked Benjamin Carlotti defeated No. 124 Clement Reix of Clemson 6-2, 7-5. UNC freshman Chris Kearney defeated No. 112 Ryan Young of the Tigers at No. 3 singles 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The win improved Kearney to 19-2 overall in singles and 12-0 in dual matches.
Junior Karl Wishart clinched the match for the Tar Heels at No. 6 singles as he rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Clemson's Kevin Fleck. Clemson earned its singles victories at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.
The win was the first for the Tar Heels at Clemson since April 15, 2001 when the Tar Heels defeated the Tigers 5-2.
UNC will play three ACC matches this week as the Heels play at No. 12 Wake Forest on Wednesday, host No. 37 Miami on Friday and host No. 29 Florida State on Sunday.
