Nick Owens returned to his home state of Washington in victorious fashion Saturday, taking the men's weight throw title at the Husky Classic in Seattle. The senior from Shelton, Wash., put up a 70-10 mark to beat a top-notch field at the meet.
Owens broke the 70-foot mark - the only athlete to do so Saturday - for the third time this season with the toss. It was also Owens' third time to achieve the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in 2007.
Also in action for the Tar Heel men was senior Clay Ragan, who competed at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Ragan finished 13th in the men's 800, running a 1:50.88. His time was a season-best and ranks as the third-best in the ACC this year. He missed out on the NCAA provisional qualifying standard by less than a second.
