No. 7 Carolina Advances To ITA Quarters

MADISON, Wis. --- No. 7 North Carolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 5-2 win over No. 15 TCU Thursday at the University of Wisconsin. The Tar Heels, who are the No. 5 seed in the tournament, will face No. 6 Georgia Tech, the tournament's No. 4 seed, on Friday.
UNC (6-1) opened the match with a pair of impressive doubles wins to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. No. 24 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand defeated Andrea Morgado and Karine Ionesco 8-1 at the No. 2 position before No. 16 Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long clinched the point with an 8-4 win over No. 9 Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska.
The Tar Heels scored a pair of straight-set singles wins to push their lead to 3-0. Marand, the No. 73 singles player in the nation, defeated Ionesco 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. Anundsen followed that with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kewa Nichols at No. 4, bringing Carolina within one win of clinching the match.
No. 33 Austin Smith did just that, rallying from down a set to defeat No. 100 Sydorska 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. The Tar Heels added another win from Collins at No. 5 to reach the final outcome.
Carolina will meet ACC rival Georgia Tech Friday afternoon at 3:30 for a spot in the semifinals.
