Tar Heels Wrap Up Play At Kitty Harrison

CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina junior Austin Smith won the seventh-place match to lead the Tar Heels on the final day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Smith defeated Jessica Preeg of Furman, 6-3, 6-2. In the first-place match, Kentucky's Lauren Meier topped Miami's Romy Farah, 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Laura Reichert was the only other Tar Heel in the championship rounds of singles play, falling 6-0, 6-0 to Furman's Laura Giola. Alexandra Jurewitz and Linzee Mabrey were straight-set winners in the consolation rounds.
In doubles action, Carolina took two of three matches from Kentucky. Junior Meg Fanjoy and Smith defeated Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston at No. 1, 8-3. Sophomore Katrina Tsang and freshman Jelena Durisic defeated Meier and Sarah Woestmann, 8-4.
The Kitty Harrison Invitational concludes the fall portion of the UNC tennis schedule. Next up is a home doubleheader with UNC Greensboro and Elon on Jan. 18.
