
No. 6 Tar Heels Gain Two In Indiana

LOOMINGTON, Ind. - The North Carolina women's tennis team traveled to the University of Indiana Saturday to take on the Indiana Hoosiers and Butler Bulldogs. The No. 6 Tar Heels topped the No. 27 Hoosiers, 5-2, and the Bulldogs, 6-1, improving their record to 14-2, 1-0 with the two wins, while Indiana moved to 9-4 and Butler now stands at 2-9, 2-0.
The Tar Heels earned the doubles point against the Hoosiers, winning at the one and three seeds. Juniors Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long cruised past Sarah Batty and Laura McGaffigan, 8-2. The No. 10 North Carolina duo improved its record to 22-9 for the season with the win. Clinching the doubles point at the three seed was the No. 46 duo of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith, who downed Cecile Perton and Alba Berdala, 8-4; the Tar Heel duo now stands at 20-7.
In singles action, North Carolina saw wins at the one, three, four and six seeds. Clinching the match for the Tar Heels was freshman Austin Smith at the four seed. Smith faced off against Alba Berdala, taking the match into the third set and gaining her 21st win with the 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory. Jenna Long, Sara Anundsen and Tanja Markovic all had convincing wins for the Tar Heels, giving Carolina a 5-2 win.
The second match of the day saw the Tar Heels down Butler, 6-1. North Carolina won all three doubles matches, clinching the doubles point and giving Carolina a 1-0 lead. Playing at the two seed, Sara Anundsen and Laura Reichert made their third dual appearance and gained their third win over Kaitlin Elliot and Michelle Hawes, winning 8-0. Making their first appearance of the dual season was the duo of Hanes Harris and Alexandra Jurewitz. The pair gained its first win over Butler's Kim Jenson and Chelsey Casperson.
The Tar Heels won five singles matches over the Bulldogs; Hanes Harris' match was cut short due to an injury. Caitlin Collins clinched the match for North Carolina at the two seed. No. 56 Collins downed Shaden Dowiatt 6-0, 6-1, marking Collins 17th win of the season. Gaining her ninth win playing at the five seed was Alexandra Jurewitz. Jurewitz downed Butler's Ashley Harrison, 6-0, 6-1. No. 21 Jenna Long gained her second win of the day and 20th win overall, while Austin Smith improved her record to 22-6 with her two wins of the day. Freshman Laura Reichert gained her 16th win of the season over Kaitlin Elliott, winning 6-0, 6-1.
"We are very proud of the team," said head coach Brian Kalbas. "To beat a tough Indiana team on their home court is great. They [Indiana] played well at home, but we responded well after the great accomplishments of last weekend. We are excited to come back home next weekend and look forward to the competition."
The Tar Heels are back in action Saturday, March 11 hosting Richmond and East Carolina University at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The Richmond match is slated for 10 a.m. and Elon at 3 p.m.
