Tallahassee, Fla. - North Carolina captured a key ACC victory Friday night, defeating #27 Florida State, 5-2. Carolina improved to 18-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
Carolina captured the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Derek Porter and Sebastian Guejman went down two breaks of serve at the number two position. However, the tandem battled back to earn a match point at 7-6. The Seminoles' Sam Chang and Jonthan Scupira held on to capture the first match 9-7. Almost simultaneously, Lenny Gullan and David Stone evened things with an 8-6 victory at number three.
The point was riding on the racquet of FSU's Ytai Abougzir at number one doubles. Abougzir served for the match at 7-6, but Carolina broke at love. Raian Luchici then held serve at love to give the Tar Heels an 8-7 advantage. FSU's Westerhof then held serve to send the deciding match to a tiebreak. Carolina dominated the breaker, with Brad Pomeroy serving out the winning point in the 7-2 victory.
Luchici and Pomeroy improved their overall record to 20-7 and 11-4 at number one doubles. Tonight's victory was also the 75th career doubles win for Pomeroy, the Asheville, N.C., senior.
Carolina opened singles play winning first sets on all six courts. Derek Porter and Brad Pomeroy put the Tar Heels up 3-0 with straight set victories. Sebastian Guejman then clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over FSU senior Chris Westerhof.
Luchici extended the Tar Heel lead to 5-0 with his 80th career singles victory. Luchici's 6-3, 6-4 victory over Abougzir was also his 10th against a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Florida State made the final score 5-2, as match (10 point) tiebreaks were played in lieu of a third set at number four and six singles.
The Tar Heels have now beaten seven teams ranked in the nation's top 30. On Sunday, Carolina travels to 13th ranked Miami with a scheduled start time of 10 a.m.
