CORAL GABLES, FLA. - Despite winning the doubles point, the No. 8 North Carolina men's tennis got swept at the top four singles positions in the lineup and fell to 13th-ranked Miami 4-1 at Coral Gables, Fla. Sunday afternoon.
The No. 13 Hurricanes improved to 13-3 overall and 5-2 in the ACC and they avenged a 4-3 loss to the Tar Heels last season in Coral Gables. UNC lost only its second match of the season and fell to 18-2 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. UNC finished a weekend trip to the state of Florida 1-1 after beating 2005 NCAA quarterfinalist Florida State 5-2 Friday in Tallahassee, Fla.
Sunday's match marked the first time this year that the Tar Heels lost to an opponent they defeated in 2005. UNC had already avenged 2005 losses to Clemson, Georgia Tech and Florida State.
UNC won the doubles point Sunday but dropped straight set singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 and three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4.
The Tar Heels have a busy week ahead with a home match against NC State Wednesday and then road matches at Maryland Friday and Boston College Sunday. The following week UNC will finish its regular season schedule with a match at Duke, concluding a three-match road streak and home matches the following weekend against Virginia and Virginia Tech.
