Third Ranked Carolina Defeats Richmond, ECU

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Third ranked North Carolina improved its record to 16-2 with a 4-3 victory over Richmond and a 7-0 sweep of East Carolina Saturday in a women's tennis doubleheader at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Jenna Long picked up two victories to improve her team leading singles record to 22-7.
In the morning match, Carolina jumped to a 3-0 lead against Richmond after winning the doubles point and the first two singles matches in less than an hour. However, the two teams split sets in the remaining four matches on court. Catilin Collins clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 victory over the Spiders' Pam Duran. Two of the last three singles matches were decided by match tiebreakers since the overall team result was determined.
Carolina efficiently defeated East Carolina in the afternoon match, losing only 11 total games in six singles matches. Freshmen Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy each recorded perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Tar Heel Head Coach Brian Kalbas was pleased with the overall effort. "This was the first match we had played outdoors, and some of our players will need a little more transition time than others," Kalbas offered. "However, I was pleased that we took care of business without looking ahead to our most difficult road trip of the season."
Over the next two weeks, Carolina will play four ACC matches on the road, including a trip to Florida State on Wednesday and a showdown with 13th ranked Miami on Friday, March 17.
