CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-seeded North Carolina scored two goals in each half and held Navy to one shot Sunday afternoon as the Tar Heels beat the Midshipmen 4-0 in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament at Fetzer Field. Carolina featured a balanced offensive attack with three goals coming from freshmen and three assists being provided by senior forward Heather O'Reilly. Freshman Whitney Engen scored twice for UNC, senior striker Elizabeth Guess had her third game-winning goal in the past four games and freshman midfielder Melissa Hayes tallied the first goal of her career to round out the Tar Heel scoring.
Carolina advances to the NCAA Round of 16 for the 25th consecutive year. The Tar Heels will meet Tennessee in the third round next Saturday at Fetzer Field at 6 p.m. Tennessee and Duke played to a scoreless tie in the second round Sunday with the Lady Vols advancing on penalty kicks, 4-3.
The Tar Heels got on the board in the 11th minute of play as Elizabeth Guess scored her fifth goal of the season and the 31st of her career. Sixteen of Guess' career goals have come in post-season games in the ACC or NCAA Tournaments. She also scored the game-winners last weekend in the semifinals and finals of the ACC Tournament against Clemson and Florida State.
The goal by Guess came at the 10:41 mark and was set up by passes from Nikki Washington and Heather O'Reilly. Washington sent a cross from the right side to the near post and O'Reilly headed the ball across the frame to Guess at the far post. Guess one-timed the ball into the upper left corner to put Carolina up 1-0.
The Tar Heels added to their lead in the 22nd minute courtesy of Engen's first goal of the match. Ali Hawkins sent a ball from the center to the left side and Tobin Heath launched a pass from the 40-yard line into the center of the box. Engen beat Navy goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes to the ball and headed it in for her ninth goal of the season.
It took almost 50 minutes for the Tar Heels to add to their lead and it was Engen who scored again. O'Reilly carried the ball into the left side of the box and then centered to Engen on the near post. Engen's header was true and the Heels were up 3-0 at 70:29.
Carolina capped off the scoring with 44 seconds to play. Junior Julie Yates and freshman Melissa Hayes, who had both entered the match just two minutes earlier, combined on the goal. Yates launched a cross from the left side of the pitch to the far post to O'Reilly. O'Reilly headed the ball back across the four-yard line to Hayes who finished the opportunity inside the left post. It was the first goal of Hayes' career and the first assist of the season for Yates.
The Tar Heels outshot the Midshipmen 20-1 in the match and had a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Lizzie Barnes, the sophomore goalkeeper for Navy, played 78 minutes and had a career high 10 saves while allowing three goals. Beth Reed played the final 12 minutes for the Mids, allowing one goal. UNC had a pair of goalkeepers play 45 minutes each - Anne Rodenbough in the first half and Ashlyn Harris in the second half and they shared the shutout. Neither was forced to make a save.
UNC's win was its 23rd in a row and it improved the Tar Heels to 23-1 on the season. Navy fell to 21-2-1. The four goals scored against the stellar defense of the Mids were the most they had allowed all season. Navy ended up allowing only nine goals in 24 games this season.
