North Carolina Women's Tennis Team Opens Season 2-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- In its season home opener, the #11th-ranked 2006 North Carolina women's tennis team swept both Davidson and UNC Greensboro 7-0, to move to a 2-0 record. In the Saturday double-header, the Tar Heels moved to a perfect record sweeping all six doubles matches and 12 of 12 straight singles matches.
Freshmen Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith won all four matches they competed in. Ranked #50th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the tandem defeated Davidson's Michele Fanney and Meredith Sketters and UNC Greensboro's Lisa Suggs and Emily Wade to move their season record to 11-3.
Fanjoy also defeated Lora Dushanova of Davidson and Sophie Rychlik of UNC Greensboro in singles; her career record moves to 8-6. Smith beat Davidson's Kim Whelan and UNC Greensboro's Lisa Suggs to move her record to 12-4.
In further singles action, ranked 46th in ITA polls, Caitlin Collins downed Kelsey Linville of Davidson 6-0, 6-2, making her record 10-4 for the season.
"We are pleased with the start of the season," says head coach Brian Kalbas. "We got some early match jitters worked out. Everyone got the opportunity to play; some players competed higher up in the line-up and did very well. It was a good tune-up for our big match next week against Tennessee."
The Tar Heels continue action Jan. 21 against #19th-ranked Tennessee and will be back at home Feb. 12 to face Notre Dame at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
