CHAPEL HILL -- No. 9 North Carolina defeated Old Dominion, 8-7, in collegiate women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. Kelly Renzi and Jess Allen each scored two goals for Carolina. Caroline Jacobs had six goals for the Lady Monarchs.
The game was the final regular season home appearance for five Tar Heel seniors: Gina Allen, Nicki Barnes-Wagner, Allison Higgins, Christina LaPenta and Ilsa Leon. Carolina concludes its 2005 regular season with a record of 12-4 and will open Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament play on Thursday vs. Virginia Tech.
In the first half, ODU scored the first two goals quickly, leading 2-0 on two goals by Jacobs in the first 5:23 of action. The Tar Heels stormed back, however, scoring five straight goals to go up 5-2. Five different UNC players scored during the 5-0 run: Erica LaGrow, Jess Allen, Christina Juras, Kelly Renzi and Higgins.
Two more goals by Jacobs, who had four first-half goals, and one by Tameka Davis tied the scored at 5-5 with 4:53 left before the break. Chrissy Rude scored an unassisted goal off her own rebound of a free position shot with 0:16 left before halftime.
Only four total goals were scored n the second half, the first of which was by Jacobs of ODU to tie the score at 6-6 just 2:06 into the period. Renzi responded 13 minutes later, scoring off a Higgins assist to make it 7-6 Tar Heels. Jess Allen's unassisted score with under five minutes left put UNC up by two goals. Jacobs scored her sixth goal of the game with a minute left, but the Lady Monarchs could not tie the score in the final moments.
The Tar Heels will return to action next week at the ACC Tournament, to be held Apr. 28-May 1 in Baltimore, Md. On Thursday, Apr. 28, the No. 4-seeded Tar Heels will play No. 5 seed Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. The winner advances to Friday's semifinal to play No. 1 Duke at 3:30 p.m.
