Sola Takes Sixth at NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS - North Carolina junior Evan Sola wrapped up the 2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with a sixth-place finish and All-America honors at 133 pounds Saturday at the Savvis Center. The Wernersville, Pa., native led the Tar Heels to 23 points, which was good for 24th in the team standings during Saturday's morning session. The championships conclude with the finals at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Sola dropped both matches Saturday, falling 5-4 to Wisconsin's Tom Clum, the tournament's No. 5 seed at 133, in a tight bout. Sola tied the match at four early in the third period, but Clum picked up a penalty point in the final minute of the match for the win. Tenth-seeded Matt Sanchez of Cal State Bakersfield posted a 10-5 win over Sola in the fifth-place match, giving Sola his sixth-place finish.
Overall, Sola went 5-3 at nationals and ran off five straight wins after falling to Chad Mendes of Cal Poly in the opening round. He defeated the tournaments No. 4 and No. 7 seeds and recorded three pins. Sola finishes his season with a 36-6 record with 13 pins. His career mark now stands at 97-26 with 21 pins. Sola's 36 victories are tied for 10th on the Tar Heel single-season list, while the 13 pins are tied for sixth.
Sola also earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in 2003. He is also a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion, and led the Tar Heels to their sixth team title in the last 10 seasons earlier this month. Carolina, which returns all 10 starters next season, went 6-9 overall and 4-2 in the ACC under second-year head coach C.D. Mock.
