UNC Women's Tennis Falls To Kentucky 5-2

MADISON, Wis. - The 15th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, falling to a deep 14th-ranked Kentucky 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Tar Heels (5-1) will face sixth-ranked Vanderbilt in a consolation match on Saturday at 3 p.m.(CST).
Both teams are not seeded in the tournament, but had convincing first-round wins over seeded opponents in first-round play on Thursday. UNC upset Tulane, the tournament's seventh seed, while Kentucky defeated Clemson. The Wildcats now advance to the semifinals to face eighth-ranked Duke on Saturday.
Carolina's two points of the match came from senior Kendall Cline at the No. 2 seed and sophomore Jenna Long at the No. 5 seed.
Cline, ranked 37th nationally, came back from a set down to defeat 30th-ranked Sarah Foster 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Cline has won nine of her last 10 matches and moves to 19-3 on the season in singles play. With the win, the Dallas, Texas, native has beaten six ranked opponents this year.
Long moved to 2-0 in singles play this week after beating the Wildcats' Lara Maurer 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. The sophomore from Fremont, Calif., is 17-3 on the season.
Kentucky grabbed the doubles point after winning at all three seeds. The Wildcats' top two doubles teams rank in the Top 15 of the ITA doubles polls.
In their last meeting, UNC cruised past the Wildcats 6-1 on Feb. 14, 2004, in Lexington, Ky.
The clubs will meet again when Kentucky travels to Chapel Hill on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m.
