Chapel Hill - Stephanie Scurachio tallied two goals and an assist-all in the second half-and the North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated George Mason 10-3 Sunday at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels held a 4-2 halftime advantage, but the Patriots pulled within one when Kristy Manas scored an unassisted goal 1:24 into the second period. It was the closest George Mason would come as North Carolina closed the game with six unanswered points.
The win pushes the 8th ranked Tar Heels 2-1, while the Patriots drop to 0-1.
Nicki Barnes-Wagner led the Tar Heel charge in the first half, notching both of her goals in the final six minutes of the opening period. Jess Allen also scored twice and had an assist. Goalie play was a key factor that gave North Carolina the decisive edge. Both teams shot 18 times, but North Carolina's Kristen Hordy strong play led to 18 saves while George Mason's Meg Dentler recorded just 8 saves in allowing 10 goals. Also scoring for North Carolina were Erica LaGrow, Allison Higgins, Gina Allen, and Chrissy Rude.
The Tar Heels will travel to Loyola in Baltimore, Maryland this coming Friday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
