CHAPEL HILL -- The Northwestern University women's lacrosse team four consecutive late goals to overcome a 5-2 halftime deficit and defeat the University of North Carolina, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Wildcats (1-0), quarterfinalists in last year's NCAA Tournament and ranked No. 3 in the 2005 preseason Inside Lacrosse poll, defeated the No. 6 Tar Heels (0-1).
Lindsey Munday had two goals and two assists for the Wildcats, including scoring the game-winning goal with 2:24 left to play. Kristen Kjellman also had two goals for Northwestern. Allison Higgins had a goal and two assists for Carolina. Sophomore Kristen Hordy played very well in goal for Carolina, recording 15 saves, several of which were made on point-blank shots by the Wildcats.
Carolina took control midway through the first half of action. The Wildcats jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Higgins' goal at the 22:32 mark tied the score at 2-2. Higgins' goal was the first of four straight for the Tar Heels, and she assisted on scores by Melissa McCarthy and Christina Juras.
The Wildcats switched their defenses at halftime and controlled possession of the ball for much of the second period. Kjellman, Munday, Laura Glassanos and Donna McCann scored goals in the second half to provide the winning margin. The Northwestern defense effectively limited Carolina's scoring chances late in the game.
The Tar Heels will return to action next weekend with home games at Fetzer Field against Temple (Friday at 5 p.m.) and George Mason (1 p.m.).
