WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- In a neutral-site game played at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium, the North Carolina field hockey team shut out Stanford 4-0 Sunday afternoon to improve to 10-2 on the season. The Cardinal, which will stay in Winston-Salem to meet Wake on Monday, fell to 4-10.
After scoring all three of their goals in the second half of Saturday's 3-1 win over Boston College, the Tar Heels did most of their scoring in the first half Sunday. Junior Rachel Dawson opened the scoring two minutes into the game when she deflected a shot by senior Naomi Weatherald into the goal to give Carolina the only point it would need. Sophomore Heather Kendell scored UNC's second goal midway through the half when she tipped in another penalty corner shot by Weatherald. The Tar Heels added one more before halftime when Dawson took a hard shot from the top of the circle and sophomore Liz Morris deflected it past Stanford goalkeeper Sarah Scheller to put UNC up 3-0 at the break.
The fourth goal came in the final minute of play, when freshman Kate Scholl tipped in a shot by sophomore Alli Tanner.
For the day, UNC outshot Stanford 18-6 and had six penalty corners to five by the Cardinal. Scheller made eight saves for Stanford and senior Katy Tran made four for UNC, which earned its eighth shutout of the season.
"We're still finding our identity as a team," Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "We played well at points, but we're still striving to play well for an entire half, much less a full game."
The Tar Heels are back in action on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game at Davidson. UNC's next home game is Friday, when Wake Forest comes to Chapel Hill.
