CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina scored three second-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over No. 17 Boston College in field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The No. 5 Tar Heels improved to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with their first league win of the year. The Eagles, in their first season of ACC play, fell to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Boston College's goal came in the 19th minute of play. Senior Sara York passed the ball in to sophomore Crystal Frates on the right side of the Tar Heel goal, and Frates flipped the ball past Tar Heel goalkeeper Katy Tran to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead that they would keep into the second half.
"Boston College gave us a battle," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We were expecting a battle, but I thought we played kind of flat in the first half. In the second half, we started to play with some heart and fire and desire."
Carolina took 14 of its 20 shots after halftime, and three of those paid off with goals. Junior Rachel Dawson tied the game four minutes into the second half with a hard shot from the top of the circle. Dawson and junior Laree Beans, who assisted on the goal, were playing at Henry Stadium for the first time since early September. They missed two weeks of UNC's season while playing for the U.S. team at the Junior World Cup in Chile, and their first game back in the lineup was last weekend's loss at Wake Forest.
Carolina took the lead in the 52nd minute of play when junior Ashley Judge scored the game winner and recorded her first career goal. Her shot from the left side came on a pass from Dawson.
The Tar Heels added a third goal in the 58th minute of play. Senior Naomi Weatherald's initial shot on the penalty corner was saved by BC goalie Jillian Savoy, but UNC sophomore Heather Kendell was waiting on the left side of the goal and put the rebound back for the final score. On the day, UNC outshot Boston College 20-2, with both BC shots coming in the first half. UNC had seven corners to three by BC.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday with a neutral-site game against Stanford. The 1 p.m. contest will be played at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
