No. 15 Women's Tennis Rallies Past No. 18 Tennessee 5-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional final, the 15th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team beat 18th-ranked Tennessee 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels move to 3-0 on the season while Tennessee is now 0-1.
Carolina's win marked only the second time UNC has beaten Tennessee since 1986. In their last meeting, the Lady Vols edged the Tar Heels 4-3 in Chapel Hill to move into the round of 16 in the 2004 NCAA tournament.
"To beat Tennessee two years in a row says a lot about this team and program," said UNC head coach Brian Kalbas. "Tennessee is so well-coached and such a tenacious team. To play such a competitive match at home and come away with the win is a great stepping stone for the rest of the season."
Carolina won the doubles point after taking two of the three matches. At the No. 1 seed, the 14th-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis defeated 51st-ranked Sabita Maharaj and Ashley Robards 8-4. The pair, one of the strongest in the program's history, is now 12-1 on the season. Sophomores Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long clinched the doubles point after their 8-5 win at the No. 2 seed.
At No. 2 singles, #37 Cline clinched the match after beating Tennessee's Blakeley Griffith 6-4, 6-4. Cline's is now 17-2 in singles play this season and has won her last seven matches.
Other Tar Heels with singles victories were #26 Mojzis, Long and Anundsen. Mojzis fought to defeat #50 Maharaj at the No. 1 seed. After falling in the second-set tie-breaker, Mojzis won 10-7 in a third-set tie break. Both Long and Anundsen cruised in their matches, with Long upsetting #107 Vicky Jones 6-4, 6-3.
North Carolina's 7 p.m. match against Elon was cancelled due to weather conditions.
UNC is back in action at home on Sunday, Jan. 30. The Tar Heels take on #29 Indiana at 1 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
