UNC Women's Tennis Downs Winthrop 4-0 In NCAA Round One

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated Winthrop 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center for a first-round NCAA Tournament victory. Carolina, ranked 15th nationally, is the tournament's 14th seed and Winthrop, ranked 75th, is a 49-64 seed.
In doubles play, Winthrop defaulted at the No. 3 match to give UNC a lead before play even started. To clinch the doubles point, seniors Lee Bairos and Kendrick Bunn took the Eagles' Paula Takahashi and Renata Caceres 8-1 in a quick 35-minute match. The Carolina duo is now 10-2.
Winthrop also defaulted at the No. 6 singles match to give the Tar Heels' their second point for the day. Carolina junior Aniela Mojzis, ranked 21st nationally, finished first, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Danielle Moita for the third team point. Mojzis moves to 26-14 on the season.
To clinch the match, freshman Caitlin Collins won 6-1, 6-2 at the third seed over Ana Paula Novaes. Collins goes to 16-17 for this year.
Winthrop, the Big South champions, finishes its season at 16-3. The Tar Heels move on to 20-8 and will face #24 Tennessee, a 17-32 seed, on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
In today's first match, Tennessee beat #50 Wisconsin, a 33-48 seed, 4-3 in a tough battle that came down to a tiebreak in the third set of the final match.
Earlier in the season, the Tar Heels defeated Tennessee 4-3 in Knoxville, Tenn. However, the Lady Volunteers' No. 1 player, #37 Tammy Encina, now has returned from injury.
This is the Tar Heels' sixth Tournament appearance and fifth first-round win. This is the third regional that UNC has hosted. It is undefeated in the NCAA Tournament when playing at home. The best tournament finish for Carolina was in 2002 when the team reached the quarterfinals.
