CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team completed a sweep of teams from the Palmetto State Saturday afternoon as Coach Sam Paul's 36th-ranked Tar Heels defeated No. 38 Clemson 4-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. The Tar Heels had traveled to Columbia, S.C. and defeated No. 19 South Carolina 6-1 this past Tuesday. Sophomore Brad Pomeroy led the Tar Heels to their win over Clemson Saturday as he won in both singles and doubles as Carolina avenged a pair of losses to the Tigers in 2003.
Carolina improves to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC with the win while Clemson is now 14-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Tar Heels claimed what proved to be the key doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Andy Metzler and Brad Pomeroy won at No. 2 and Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici triumphed at No. 3 both by 8-5 margins.
UNC went on to win the match by claiming a trio of singles matches in straight sets. Nick Monroe, ranked No. 36 nationally, beat No. 75 Nathan Thompson of Clemson 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Brad Pomeroy scored a decisive 6-2, 6-0 win over Robbye Poole at No. 5 and Geoff Boyd clinched the win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Ryan Young at No. 6.
Clemson's singles wins came from Goran Sterijovski at No. 2, nationally-ranked No. 71 Jarmaine Jenkins in a three-set win at No. 3 and John Boetsch at No. 5.
The Tar Heels return to action as they start play in the Blue-Gray Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday. Clemson plays at Georgia Tech on Wednesday.
