CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 19-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team returned to the win column Saturday morning as the Tar Heels defeated in-state rival UNC Greensboro 6-0 in ideal weather conditions at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels were playing their first match since losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 14 Harvard a week earlier.
UNC improved to 14-2 with the victory while the Spartans fell to 2-9.
Carolina claimed the doubles point with victories by Geoff Boyd and Nick Monroe at the top spot and a second win by Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici at the No. 3 spot.
The Tar Heels went on to score a quintet of decisive wins at No. 2 through No. 6 singles to make the final score 6-0. The No. 1 match was suspended after Carolina had already clinched the team win.
Carolina's straight set wins were recorded by Andy Metzler, Derek Porter, Raian Luchici, Brad Pomeroy and Geoff Boyd.
The match was the first of a morning-afternoon doubleheader Saturday. Carolina was to play UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
