CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team swept Maryland 7-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the 19th-ranked Tar Heels improved their record to 2-0 in the ACC and 16-2 overall.
Nick Monroe and Geoff Boyd paired up for the team's first win of the day when they defeated Maryland's Troy Demers and Ian Bliss 8-2 in doubles play. Monroe and Boyd are the No. 21 doubles team in the nation. On the number two court, Tar Heels Andy Metzler and Brad Pomeroy also claimed an 8-2 victory. Carolina's No. 3 team of Raian Luchici and Jonathan Janda easily overcame the Terrapin team of Scott Fink and David Reichsfeld with a score of 8-3.
In singles play, senior Nick Monroe, ranked No. 31 nationally, defeated Terrapins No. 1 seed Troy Demers in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 2 seed, senior Andy Metzler overcame a tough start to top Scott Peters 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Tar Heel sophomore Derek Porter also came from behind to clinch a victory over No. 3 seed Ian Bliss 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Tar Heels Raian Luchici, Brad Pomeroy and Geoff Boyd encountered little trouble as they each took straight set wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 seeds respectively. Pomeroy, a sophomore from Asheville, N.C., has now won 15 of his last 17 matches.
This match was the team's first of seven consecutive ACC matches. "They're going to be tough matches. Maryland has improved. They played us hard today and I give Coach Jim Laitta a lot of credit," said Coach Sam Paul. "N.C. State is coming with one of their best team's in a long time. We look forward to a tough match tomorrow."
The Tar Heels will host N.C. State at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Wednesday, March 24 at 3 p.m.
