CHAPEL HILL - Katie Chrest scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime at the 70:28 mark to give Duke a 7-6 win over North Carolina in women's lacrosse action from Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon. Meghan Miller and Kristen Waagbo had two goals apiece for Duke. Chrissy Rude led Carolina with two goals and an assist.
With the win, Duke improves to 5-1 this season, 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina falls to 4-2, 0-1. The win gives Duke one point in the 2003-04 Carlyle Cup standings, which the Blue Devils lead, 10-7.
The Tar Heels started quickly, with Rude scoring a goal and assisting Brooke Dieringer on another for a 2-0 Carolina lead 3:16 into the game. The teams traded goals and UNC led 3-1 less than seven minutes into the contest. The Duke defense stiffened later in the first half, however, and the Blue Devils scored four of the last five goals of the half and led 5-4 at the break. Meghan Miller had two goals for Duke in the first half.
Allison Higgins had a strong second half to get the Tar Heels back in the game. Carolina went over 30 minutes without a goal, watching a 4-2 lead turn into a 6-4 deficit until Higgins scored off a Christina Juras assist at the 41:16 mark to make it 6-5 Duke. Higgins then assisted Kelly Renzi on the game-tying goal with 1:49 left in the second half. UNC had the ball with a chance to win it in regulation but could not put the ball in the cage.
Carolina dominated possession in the first two three-minute overtime periods but neither team scored, so the game went to sudden death. In the second three-minute sudden death overtime period, Chrest took a pass from Kristy Dirks near the eight-meter arc and shot it past UNC goalkeeper Kristen Hordy into the lower left corner of the net to end the game.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday afternoon at Virginia.
