North Carolina Men's Swimmers and Divers Fall To No. 11 Virginia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 11 Virginia continued its winning ways in Atlantic Coast Conference men's swimming and diving as the Cavaliers defeated No. 22 North Carolina 211-89 in dual meet action at Koury Natatorium Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in the ACC while the Tar Heels are now 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the ACC.
Senior Eric Poitras led the UNC effort as he won the three-meter diving competition and finished second in one-meter diving. Poitras had a winning score of 343.28 points in three-meter diving and he finished second on the one-meter board with a score of 322.65.
Junior Eddy Matkovic had a pair of second-place finishes for the Tar Heels as he was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.21 and second in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.25. UNC also finished second in both breaststroke events as senior Dan Vick clocked a 58.59 in the 100 breast and sophomore Patrick Woodruff went 2:05.17 in the 200 breast.
Sophomores Chad Ames and Josh Glasco also had runnerup finishes for UNC. Ames went 1:39.36 to place second in the 200 freestyle and Glasco clocked 1:48.12 in the 200 fly. Carolina's 200-yard medley relay finished second in a time of 1:32.94. That relay consisted of Eddy Matkovic, Aaron Burns, Josh Glasco and Justin Donato.
Carolina's next action comes against Maryland next Saturday in College Park, Md. at 11 a.m. Virginia plays host to Pittsburgh at 12 noon on February 1.
