CHAPEL HILL - Freshman Brooke Dieringer scored two second-half goals and the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team withstood a second-half rally by Dartmouth to hold on for a 9-8 win on Friday night at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Dieringer and Beth Ames each scored two goals for Carolina, ranked No. 17 in this week's IWCLA national poll, while Stephanie Scurachio had a goal and two assists. Katieanne Christian scored three goals for No. 8 Dartmouth.
Starting at halftime, the game was delayed by 45 minutes because of a lightning storm. Soon after play resumed, Dieringer scored the first two goals of the second half in a span of 31 seconds to give the Tar Heels a 9-5 lead.
With the win, Carolina improves to 7-9 this season. Dartmouth falls to 9-4 with the loss.
Ames scored the Tar Heels' first goal just 30 seconds into the game, and six different Carolina players scored in the first half as UNC led, 7-5, at the break. Four of Carolina's seven first-half goals came on free position shots. Kate Killen scored twice in the first half for Dartmouth.
After Dieringer gave Carolina a 9-5 lead at the 41:11 mark, Dartmouth rallied and scored three consecutive goals to make it 9-8 UNC with just over five minutes left to play. Carolina tried to stall, but Dartmouth picked up a ground ball with 1:41 left and made their final offensive push.
Dartmouth was able to get one final shot off with under 20 seconds left, but UNC senior goalkeeper Margaret Garofalo, who played very well in the cage all night, made a save to seal the victory. Garofalo had nine saves in the contest.
Carolina's 2003 regular season is over. The Tar Heels now await a possible NCAA Tournament bid, to be announced on Sunday night.
