Tar Heels Sweep UNC Greensboro On Senior Day

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team swept UNC Greensboro 3-1 and 4-0 on Senior Day at the UNC Softball Complex this afternoon. Pitchers Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Brandi Griffin (Wilmington, N.C.) held the Spartans to just one unearned run in 14 innings as the Tar Heels improved to 38-17-1 on the season. UNCG falls to 33-13.
Carolina struck first in the opener in the bottom of the second inning scoring two unearned runs. Junior Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) reached on an error by the third baseman. Sophomore Ashley Allen (Houston, Texas) hammered a ball through the first baseman's legs to score the game's first run. Senior Anna Tharrington (Rocky Mount, N.C.) sacrificed the runner over to third and UNC scored on a double steal to lead 2-0.
UNC Greensboro answered with an unearned run in the third inning as Penny Thompson slugged a ball into center field scoring the Spartans first run of the game.
The Tar Heels increased their lead to three in the fifth inning with a two-out single by Streete to score freshman Megan Welch (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) who tripled to leadoff the inning.
Cox struck out four of the last six Spartan hitters to tally 11 in the game. She allowed four hits to improve to 23-9 on the year.
Welch, senior Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Streete, Holden and juniors Natashalyn Snipes (Durham, N.C.) and Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) each had hits for the Tar Heels. Carolina scored three runs, on six hits and one error, while UNCG scored one run, on four hits and two errors.
In game two, the Tar Heels scored the first run in the bottom of the second inning on a passed ball. Price led off the inning with a line drive to third base. Streete moved her over on a sacrifice bunt. Price advanced to third on a deep fly ball and scored on mishap by the UNCG catcher.
Holden drove in the second run of the game for the Heels in the third inning with a single up the middle to score teammate Welch who hit her second triple of the afternoon off the right field fence.
Carolina scored another run in the fifth inning as Price smacked her second double of the game into left center to score Porter who reached on a single up the middle. The Tar Heels added the final run of the game in the sixth inning on an error by the second baseman as UNC downed the Spartans 4-0.
Carolina scored four runs, on 11 hits and no errors, while UNCG had no runs, on five hits and no errors.
Sophomore pitcher Brandi Griffin (Wilmington, N.C.) threw her first shutout of the season, scattering five hits and striking out one. Griffin advances to 2-2 on the season.
Seniors Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Porter each had two hits in game two, while Welch led the Tar Heels with a 3-for-4 performance.
North Carolina will close out the regular season against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland in College Park, Md., Saturday, April 26.
