CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 13 North Carolina men's tennis team won its third match in a row as the Tar Heels defeated Charlotte 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Complex. Tar Heels Trystan Meniane and Derek Porter scored wins in tough three set matches to lead the Tar Heels to the victory.
North Carolina improved to 6-2 on the season with the victory while the 49ers dropped to 3-7 on the campaign.
Carolina swept all three doubles matches in rather easy fashion to earn the first team point. Carolina then captured five of the six singles points. Meniane and Porter won their singles matches in three sets at No. 1 and No. 4 singles and Nicholas Monroe, Andrew Metzler and Geoff Boyd had straight set wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6.
Charlotte's Jonathan Clark outlasted Carolina's Daniel Pinchbeck at No. 3 singles by a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 score and in the process handed Pinchbeck his first singles loss since October 25, breaking a five-match win streak for the Australian sophomore.
UNC returns to action next Thursday in the Blue-Gray Championships at Montgomery, Ala. The Tar Heels will play their Round of 16 match on Thursday against an opponent yet to be named.
