TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Florida State (28-5, 6-3 ACC) defeated North Carolina (19-9, 3-3 ACC), 2-1 on a cold, windy Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The Tar Heels and Seminoles both got strong performances from their starting pitchers. FSU's Daniel Davidson pitched 6.1 innings and gave up just one run while striking out six to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Carolina's Adam Kalkhof also pitched 6.1 innings, but gave up two runs in his first career defeat.
The Seminoles scored first with a run in the bottom of the second. Carolina starter Adam Kalkhof struck out the first two batters in the inning but walked Chris Hart who scored when Matt Sauls followed with a wind-blown triple to right field.
In the top of the fifth, Sammy Hewitt's fifth home run of the season gave the Tar Heels their first run and tied the game.
Florida State regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jerrod Brown singled and stole second, then came around to score on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Derrick Smith.
The Tar Heels return to action at Boshamer Stadium this week against Charlotte on Tuesday and Coastal Carolina on Wednesday. The starting time for both games is 6 p.m.
