Women's Lacrosse Rips Davidson, 14-1, in Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team opened its 2003 regular season with a 14-1 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium. Beth Ames had four goals for Carolina, while Brooke Young and Nicki Barnes each had two goals and one assist.
Seven different Tar Heels scored as the Tar Heels took a 7-0 lead 16 minutes into the game. Carolna eventually led 10-0 before Davidson's Eloise Grose scored with 0:02 left in the first half to make it 10-1 at halftime.
The Tar Heels added four more goals in the second half, crusing to the 14-1 victory.
Senior Margaret Garofalo started in goal for UNC, allowing Davidson?s one goal. Junior Katelyn Hoffman, the returning starter in the cage, played the second half and did not allow a goal.
Carolina, faced with replacing the top four scorers from last year?s team (all lost to graduation) started several new faces in the game. Freshmen Melissa McCarthy, Brooke Dieringer, Stephanie Scurachio and Lindsey Stover all scored one goal in the game, while junior Rachel Szakmary and sophomore Allison Higgins each also added a goal. Scurachio and senior co-captain Lynne Quattrone had assists.
The Tar Heels will return to action next weekend when it plays road games at Johns Hopkins on Friday and at Maryland on Sunday in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
