Women's Tennis Falls To University of Kentucky 4-3

Chapel Hill - The seventh-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team fought hard Friday afternoon, but fell to the 25th-ranked University of Kentucky 4-3 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. "I am disappointed that we lost," said coach Jen Callen, "but proud of everyone for fighting hard. This team will bounce back."
Kentucky (8-4) claimed the first point of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Wildcat pair of Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen outlasted Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn 8-6 at No. 1, while Nathalie Roels and Shannon Stafford defeated North Carolina's Tanja Markovic and Lee Bairos 8-5 at No. 3. The Tar Heel team of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline were successful at No.2 by defeating Leigh Bradwell and Jill Buckley 8-5.
Carolina fought hard in every singles match, but was only able to capture three of the four wins that it needed for a victory. #11 Pinchbeck earned one point for the Tar Heels at No. 1 by defeating #37 Witten 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in her first three-set match of the season. Mojzis had a season first as well, making her debut at No. 2 due to the absence of Marlene Mejia. #61 Mojzis upset #48 Roels 6-1, 6-2 to account for another North Carolina point. Carolina's final point came at No. 4, where Bairos defeated Stafford 6-0, 6-2.
The Tar Heels' record falls to 6-3 with the loss. The team's next opportunity to improve its record will come Saturday, March 1 when Carolina hosts Boston University at noon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The scheduled match for Saturday, Feb. 22 against Old Dominion University has been canceled.
