CARY, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina advanced to the championship match of the ACC Women's Soccer Tournament for the 16th straight year with a 6-1 victory Friday night before 4,461 fans at SAS Soccer Park. The Tar Heels will meet No. 9 Florida State Sunday in the championship match at 1:30 p.m. The match will be televised on Fox Sports South, Sunshine and Comcast Networks.
In the process of beating Duke, the Tar Heels set or tied four ACC Tournament records, led by senior forward Alyssa Ramsey whose seven points are the most ever in a single ACC Tournament match. Ramsey and sophomore forward both had three assists in the match, tying the tournament single game record.
UNC also set an ACC Tournament record for assists in a match with 11 after tying the record of nine on Wednesday night against NC State. UNC's 20 assists in two games are also a record for most in a tournament. UNC had 18 assists in all three games of the 1994 and 1996 tournaments.
UNC got on the board first in the sixth minute on Heather O'Reilly's seventh goal of the year assisted by Ramsey and goalkeeper Aly Winget. O'Reilly shot into the right corner of the goal after taking a long assist by Ramsey.
Duke tied the game in the 24th minute on an own goal. UNC's Carmen Watley tapped the ball back to Winget, but she slipped on the wet grass at the six-yard and the ball rolled over the end line for the tying score.
In the 32nd minute the Tar Heels went up for good on Elizabeth Guess' fifth goal of the campaign. Lindsay Tarpley's original shot was saved by the Blue Devils' Thora Helgadottir but Guess was on the spot to drive the rebound into the empty net.
UNC came out in the second half and in less than three minutes made it 3-1 as Ramsey's header off a give-and-go sequence resulted in her sixth goal with assists by Lori Chalupny and Tarpley. Then Tar Heels then sealed the verdict with a three-goal burst in a period of 6:11. Ramsey scored goal No. 7 of the season with assists by Tarpley and Kendal Fletcher. Fletcher's throw in went to Tarpley whose feed to Ramsey ended up in the right side of the net. Just 4:26 later it was O'Reilly who scored her eighth goal and second of the match with feeds by Ramsey and Mary McDowell. O'Reilly went in on a breakaway after taking a nifty entry pass by Ramsey. Carolina finished the scoring at 74:33 as Guess notched her second of the match and sixth of the year as Ramsey's corner kick was flicked on by Kacey White to Guess for the finishing header.
Carolina improved to 20-0-0 on the season while the Blue Devils fell to 13-6-1.
