WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Jeremiah White scored a pair of second half goals to lead the fifth-ranked Demon Deacons to a 4-0 victory over No. 3 North Carolina Saturday in men's soccer action at Spry Stadium. The loss snaps an eight-match unbeaten streak for the Tar Heels (11-2-3, 2-2-1 ACC), while Wake Forest (11-3, 3-2 ACC) has now won seven straight games.
After holding a 1-0 lead at the half, the Deacons tallied three scores in the second half for the final margin. White scored twice in a little over four minutes to increase the lead to 3-0. His first goal came and 68:02, followed by the second at 72:02. Vincente Bastidas assisted on both, while Scott Sealy was also credited with an assist on the second. Mark Ellington closed out the scoring for Wake with a goal at 88:17. Tomy Szczypiorski got the Deacs on the board with their lone first half goal at 15:55.
William Hesner picked up the shutout for Wake with two saves in 90 minutes. Ford Williams also made two stops for the Tar Heels, who were outshot, 10-7.
The crowd of 3,868 marked the largest regular season attendance figure in Spry Stadium history. Wake has now won 27 in a row at home.
The four goals allowed are a season-high for the Tar Heels, who had allowed just two scores in their last seven matches. Carolina, who is now 4-2 against nationally-ranked opponents, last lost 1-0 at Virginia on Sept. 21.
The four-goal margin is the largest ever in the UNC-WFU series and marks the worst defeat for the Tar Heels since a 4-0 loss to Duke in the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
Carolina returns to action Saturday, Nov. 1 against Clemson at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. With a victory in their final regular season home match of the season, the Tar Heels will secure a winning record in ACC play for the fourth consecutive season.
