CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -Maryland's Tiffany Marsh scored the game-winning goal with 9:31 remaining in overtime Saturday afternoon to send the Terrapins to a 3-2 win over North Carolina in Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey action at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Third-ranked Maryland improved to 15-2 (2-2 ACC) with the win, while fourth-ranked UNC fell to 13-4 (2-2).
The game was the eighth overtime contest in the last 11 UNC-Maryland matchups and the second 3-2 overtime win in a row for the Terrapins. They won by the same score in the 2002 ACC Tournament, the teams' last meeting.
"This loss is really disappointing," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I felt like we had a chance to win the game in overtime, and I'm disappointed that we didn't defend our home field. This should give us motivation to work harder in practice and come out stronger."
The loss was UNC's third in a row, all to teams ranked in the top three nationally. Last weekend, the Tar Heels fell to then-No. 3 Duke and No. 1 Wake Forest.
Maryland junior Colleen Barbieri put her team on the board first on Saturday with a goal from the field, assisted by sophomore Jackie Ciconte. UNC evened the score with 7:24 remaining in the half when junior Kelsey Keeran was on target with her third penalty stroke of the season. In the second half, Ciconte scored on an assist from Anja Boettcher to put Maryland ahead with 25:40 to play, but the Tar Heels tied the score once again on a goal by freshman Laree Beans with 17:56 remaining.
Neither team could come up with a goal before regulation expired. UNC got its only penalty corner of the half with no time remaining on the clock, but freshman Rachel Dawson's shot was saved by UM goalkeeper Tori Cano. In overtime, Maryland had three shots to one by UNC, and third was good for the win. Marsh's goal, assisted by Lauren Powley, was her first of the year.
Carolina plays its final home game of the regular season on Sunday when it hosts Radford at 1 p.m. The team will celebrate Senior Day, honoring Mary Havell, a back from Chevy Chase, Md., who has another year of eligibility remaining but is a senior academically and will graduate in May.
