
Duke tops Carolina, 1-0

DURHAM,N.C. - The 23rd-ranked Duke men's soccer team knocked off 14th-ranked North Carolina, 1-0, in a key Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match-up on Saturday night in front of 4,800 fans at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils improve to 5-2-1, 2-1 ACC, while North Carolina falls to 6-3, 1-1 ACC.
Junior Jordan Cila nailed a 30-yard rocket into the left corner of the net to beat North Carolina goalkeeper Ford Williams in the 51st minute of action for the game-winning goal.
The victory by the Blue Devils was the first against the Tar Heels since the 1999 season and gave Duke three points towards the Carlyle Cup standings. The Carlyle Cup is an all-sport competition between Duke and North Carolina presented by Carlyle & Company jewelers. Tonight's contest was the first competition in the 2002-03 season so the Blue Devils lead 3-0.
The match began in Duke's favor in the first minute of action, when freshman Ian Carey had a shot on goal saved by Williams. It was a half which each team took six shots and had two saves.
In the second half, North Carolina began quickly with a shot on goal by Mike Gell, but Blue Devil sophomore goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge registered a key save. Cila then came back in less than a minute for the game winning goal assisted by Carey.
North Carolina's best chance for a goal came at the 77:42 mark in the second half as Jonathan Davis hit a 20-yard shot off the right corner of the post. Trowbridge came through for the lue Devils with four saves on the night. He overcame a kick to the leg in the first half, which almost took him out of the contest.
For the match, North Carolina outshot Duke 10-8. Duke will next host Davidson on Tuesday at 7:00 PM, while North Carolina will travel to Elon on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
