Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- The University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated Loyola (Md.), 5-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Tournament at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina did not lose a single game in the match which lasted just over one hour.
"I thought it was important for our team to keep their intensity today and to stay focused and their focus was very strong throughout the match.," said Carolina head coach Jen Callen. "I tell my players to give their best effort every day and to keep going after it. I think (today's match) is a great sign for this team."
The Tar Heels easily won the doubles point, taking all three doubles matches by a score of 8-0. In singles play, junior Kate Pinchbeck clinched the match for UNC with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position.
"We haven't played since the ACC Tournament so everyone was real excited about getting back to playing again," said Pinchbeck, who is ranked 14th in the country. "It's hard to come back after two weeks because we were just so excited about winning the ACC, but we did find the motivation to train and to win. We?ve been working hard on our doubles because early in the season we had been struggling and it has come together now, thank goodness."
Julie Rotondi was the first Tar Heel to earn a victory in singles play, defeating Margot Wallace, 6-0, 6-0. Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline also earned straight set victories for Carolina.
Carolina will face Furman in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
