CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team ended the 2002 regular season in solid fashion Sunday, defeating Virginia 6-1 at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. UNC finished the year in second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference and has now finished first, second or third in the ACC in 13 of the last 14 seasons.
The Tar Heels (16-5, 7-1 ACC) began the day by winning all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point from the Cavaliers (11-11, 2-6 ACC). The 51st-ranked duo of Marcio Petrone and Greg Archer handled UVa's Jonathan Chou and Michael Duquette 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Flights two and three each ended in close 8-6 Tar heel wins.
Carolina then dominated UVa in singles play, winning five of six matches. Petrone, ranked 53rd in the nation, defeated Duquette 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to finish his senior season 17-3 in regular season dual matches in the top position. Tar Heel junior Trystan Meniane suffered the only loss for UNC, dropping his No. 2 singles match to UVa's Stephen Nolen, 6-3, 6-3. The two sets Meniane lost were the only two sets of the weekend the Tar Heels did not win in two dual matches. UNC swept the #3-#6 singles spots in straight set wins.
The Tar Heels will now prepare for next weekend's ACC Tournament in Raleigh. Carolina will face the winner of Thursday's match between seventh-seeded Virginia and eighth-seeded Maryland. UNC's first action will come in the quarterfinals on Friday at noon at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.
