Tar Heels Blank Virginia in Quarterfinals of ACC Tennis Tournament

Raleigh, N.C. - North Carolina defeated Virginia 4-0 to advance to the semifinals of the ACC Men's Tennis Tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh, N.C. Today's victory was the Tar Heels' second over the Cavaliers in the past five days, as the teams completed the regular season Sunday with a 6-1 UNC victory in Charlottesville.
Carolina's lone senior, Marcio Petrone, once again provided the spark at the top of the singles line-up. Petrone clinched the overall team match for the sixth time this season with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mike Duquette. Petrone, ranked 34th nationally, improved to 18-3 at number one singles.
After capturing the doubles point with wins at the #2 and #3 positions, junior Trystan Meniane put the Tar Heels ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Stephen Nolen. Meniane improved to 25-10 with the victory.
Freshman Geoff Boyd won his third straight singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Jonathan Chou to put UNC ahead 3-0. Carolina improved to 4-3 overall against Virginia in ACC Tournament play.
The Tar Heels (17-5, 8-1 in the ACC) will face Wake Forest, a 4-1 winner over Clemson, in Saturday's semifinal at 2 p.m.
