HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Senior Erin McInnes (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) scored a game-high three goals, including the game-winner, to give fourth-ranked North Carolina (11-2) a 5-4 win over 11th-ranked James Madison (7-8) in women's lacrosse Sunday afternoon.
Neither team scored for nearly the first 10 minutes of play until the Tar Heels netted three unanswered goals.
The first goal came at 21:13 from senior Kellie Thompson (Grasonville, Md./St. Mary's), the second from McInnes at 12:02 on an assist from senior Lindsay Stone (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and the third from Stone at 4:16 on a free-position shot.
The North Carolina defense forced 16 Dukes' turnovers in the game with nine coming in the first half, and the Tar Heels also limited JMU to a season-low 16 shots.
Senior Kristen Dinisio (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored the Dukes' only goal of the first half at 2:18. McInnes scored her second goal of the game with 15 seconds remaining to give North Carolina a 4-1 lead at the half.
JMU outscored the Tar Heels 3-1 in the second half to cut the lead to 5-4 with 4:48 left. However, North Carolina limited the Dukes to a single shot on goal in the remaining minutes to secure the win.
JMU freshman keeper Amy Altig (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made a strong showing in goal with nine saves, and Tar Heel sophomore Katelyn Hoffman (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) stopped four shots.
