COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team used a second-half surge to secure its sixth win of the season and hand Ohio State University a 12-7 loss in the opening game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
North Carolina's win was followed by a 13-11 Maryland win over Penn State to push the ACC to 2-0 in the tournament. The American Lacrosse Conference -- which is the conference both Penn State and Ohio State play in despite their school's primary affiliation with the Big Ten -- now stands at 0-2.
The first half was a strong one for both teams with Carolina taking an early 5-2 lead before the Buckeyes challenged. With less than 15 minutes remaining in the half, No. 19 OSU ran off three unanswered goals and sent shockwaves through the crowd of 900 by knotting the score at five with the fifth-ranked Tar Heels. Just before the end of the half, however, Erin McInnes found the back of the net with 0:03 on the clock to put UNC up one at intermission.
Ohio State scored the first goal of the second half just over five minutes in, then the Tar Heels played to their Top 5 ranking. The Heels scored six unanswered goals, four of which came from standout Kellie Thompson, and the game was on ice at 12-6 with under two minutes remaining.
Thompson led all scorers with five goals while Lindsay Stone added three goals and two assists for the Tar Heels. Shannon Wilson was the Buckeyes' leading scorer with a pair of goals and an assist while Erin Forquer was outstanding in the cage for OSU with 16 saves.
The two teams return to action in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday as they will flip-flop opponents as Ohio State takes on Maryland at 11:00 a.m. while the Tar Heels will try their hand against Penn State at 1:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
