CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The North Carolina men's tennis team won a hard-fought battle with Brown on Monday evening, defeating the Bears 4-3 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Freshman Geoff Boyd clinched the win for the Tar Heels, beating Brown's Nick Goldberg at No. 6 singles with the match standing at 3-2 in Carolina's favor. After winning the first set 6-3, Boyd dropped the second set 3-6, but he regained his composure and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set, before winning 6-1.
"After losing the second set, I said to myself, 'You are going to stay out there as long as you have to to win this match,'" Boyd explained. "I decided I was not going to miss any balls and [Goldberg] eventually broke down. I was not really playing thinking about our's as the final match, but it did make me focus more."
Carolina lost the doubles point, dropping two of three matches to Brown, which is 7-7 on the season and represented the East Region in the Indoor Team National Championships last month. UNC prevailed, however, by taking four of the six singles matches from the Bears. Junior Trystan Meniane continued his unbelievable season by beating Brown's Justin Natale 7-5, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Meniane has lost just one singles match in all of 2002.
Fresh off of a match-clinching victory himself against Georgia Tech on Sunday, Carolina senior Marcio Petrone defeated Brown's Nick Malone 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Tar Heel sophomore Nicholas Monroe bounced back from yesterday's singles loss to Georgia Tech and a doubles loss earlier versus the Bears to defeat Chris Drake 7-5, 6-2 at flight four.
"This was a tough win against a good team," said UNC head coach Sam Paul. "I am really proud of Marcio and Trystan, but I am especially proud of Nick and Geoff for bouncing back from tough losses to help us get this victory."
The win improved the #44 Tar Heels to 10-4 (2-0 ACC) in the spring. Carolina is now only one win short of its entire victory total for the 2001 season when UNC finished 11-9 overall. The Tar Heels have seven regular season matches remaining this year as well as the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels are off until Friday, when they will host ACC rival Clemson at 3 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in an effort to match its win total of last season.
