CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The 40th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team continued its winning streak by defeating Clemson, 5-2, under sunny skies at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have now won three consecutive matches and look forward to Sunday's showdown with #15 Virginia Commonwealth here in Chapel Hill in the penultimate home match of the campaign.
Senior Marcio Petrone, the lone senior on the Tar Heels' roster, clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Clemson's Jamin Thompson at the #1 spot.
"I'm very glad the way I'm playing right now," says Petrone. "I have confidence under my belt now ... and I'm just playing my tennis and not thinking about outcomes." Petrone, a native of a Bairro, Meireles, Brazil, is 12-2 in the spring season at the #1 position for the Tar Heels.
Head Coach Sam Paul also received positive results Friday from sophomore Nicholas Monroe and freshmen Daniel Pinchbeck and Geoff Boyd. Monroe defeated Marko Gojanovic, 6-1, 6-2 at the #3 position while Pinchbeck and Boyd also won their matches in straight sets and #34 and #5, respectively.
"We are getting better from match to match," says Paul. "I'm pleased with some of the adjustments we've been making. Our next four matches are going to be very challenging with four successive nationally-ranked teams, including three in the Top 20."
The Heels match against Virginia Commonwealth will be at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, which is located on Friday Center Drive off Highway 54. Carolina then hosts Wake Forest before visits to Florida State and Duke.
