Carolina Softball Sweeps First Day At Buzz

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The University of North Carolina Softball team beat Western Kentucky 9-0 in five innings for their first game and Elon College 11-3 in six innings in the second game.
In the first game, senior pitcher Shannon Walsh pitched 5 shutout innings giving up two hits and striking out six batters. Walsh also helped the Tar Heels offensively, going 1-3 with a single and RBI.
Senior outfielder Rosie Gustavson went two for three in the game with a double and one RBI. Freshman designated player Ashley Allen went one for two at the plate with a double and two RBIs.
First baseman Kelly Ramsey also added two RBIs for the Tar Heels as she went 1-3.
In the second game, Carolina beat Elon College 11-3. Freshman Ashley Allen, who pitched the seond game, struck out five Elon batters while allowing only three runs on four hits.
The Tar Heels scored five runs in the second inning, led by sophmore second baseman Dionne Streete's two run single. The inning was led off by Senior Natalie Anter's walk. Sarah Young, also a senior, pinch ran for Anter and later scored on a single by Allen. Sophmore catcher Anna Tharrington scored on a fielders choice by Sophmore Jessica Robinson. Gustavson reached on a error, scoring Streete before the inning was over.
In the fourth inning, Streete started the Tar Heels with a triple and later scored on a single by Gustavson. Carolina added one run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to end the game by the eight run rule.
Carolina (14-15) is scheduled to continue play at the Buzz Classic facing Michigan State University at 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Georgia State at 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
