Tar Heel Softball Continues Success At Buzz Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The University of North Carolina Softball team continued it's success Saturday at the Buzz Classic in Marietta Georgia, going 2-0 on the day to make their overall record 4-0 for the tournament.
In the first game, the Tar Heels came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Michigan State 9-4 in a game that included a total of six home runs between the two teams.
To lead off the fourth inning, junior outfielder Tiffany Tolleson singled and advanted from second to third on an error by the pitcher that put senior Rosie Gustavson at second base. Junior Quinn Porter hit a home run over the left center fence to put the Tar Heels up 3-2.
After Michigan State third baseman Robyn Golden homered to tie the game in the fifth inning, the Tar Heels never looked back. With two outs in the six inning, Porter homered again, but this time to right field. Senior catcher Natalie Anter double to right center and scored on a two-run home run by senior Kelly Ramsey, which made the score 6-3. The Tar Heels then added one more run on a home run by Freshman pitcher Erica Ennis.
Senior pitcher Shannon Walsh started the game for the Tar Heels, pitching three and a third innings and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two batters. Ennis, then relieved her and pitched the final three and two thirds innings striking out two more Spartan batters.
In the second game, the Tar Heels beat Georgia State 5-1, scoring all five of their runs in the second and third innings. Freshman pitcher Ashley Allen pitched five innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out three batters. Erica Ennis, also a freshman, releived Allen and pitched the final two innings.
In the second inning, senior Natalie Anter started off the inning with a single to center field. She scored two runners later on a two-run home run by sophmore shortstop Emily Price.
In the third inning, junior Tiffany Tolleson,who reached on a single and stole second base, scored on a single by junior Quinn Porter. Anter then sent a ball over the center field fence, scoring Porter, to make the score 5-0. Georgia State scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a double by Cindy Gillies.
The Tar Heels begin their final day of action at the Buzz Classic as the number two seed and will face the winner of the Nichols State/Mercer game being played saturday night at 9:00 p.m..
