TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Tar Heels scored a big win in the sun in the second leg of a three-match road trip in Tempe, defeating the ninth-ranked Sun Devils on their home court, 4-3. The victory is Carolina's fifth of the season over a top-20 team and improves the team's record to 11-3.
Dominant play at the top of the lineup led the Tar Heels to victory. Marlene Mejia, Kate Pinchbeck and Julie Rotondi all won their matches in straight sets in the top three flights. Mejia defeated 24th-ranked Adria Engel, 6-0, 6-2 at flight one, Pinchbeck beat 52nd-ranked Dora Krstulovic, 6-2, 6-2 in flight two and Rotondi swept Mhairi Brown, 6-4, 6-1 in flight three.
"We came today prepared to play as a team," Pinchbeck said. "We really believed that we could win this match and it showed on the court."
Pinchbeck's win continues one of the most successful and dominant streaks in Tar Heel history, improving her record to 14-0 in dual match play this season. Pinchbeck has lost only one set in spring play.
Aniela Mojzis scored the fourth point for the Tar Heels, defeating Megan Yeats, 6-3, 6-0. Carolina will face Purdue Friday at 1 p.m. EST to try and finish 3-0 in Tempe after defeating Marquette 7-0 earlier in the week.
