Carolina Tops Notre Dame At National Indoors

MADISON, Wisc. - The Tar Heels won all but three singles sets en route to claiming a 6-1 victory over 13th-ranked Notre Dame in the quarterfinal consolation round at the ITA Indoor National Championships on Saturday.
Marlene Mejia, Julie Rotondi, Kate Pinchbeck and Aniela Mojzis, UNC's top four players, all won their singles matches in straight sets to close out Carolina's final match at the tournament. Lee Bairos also won her singles match in a tie break 4-6, 6-3, (10-8) after the team outcome had been decided.
Pinchbeck teamed with Rotondi and Bairos teamed with Kendall Cline to win their doubles matches and clinch the doubles point for the Tar Heels. Mejia and Mojzis fell in the doubles round while Kristin Koenig dropped her singles match in straight sets.
The victory was the second over a ranked team at the tournament after UNC defeated ninth-ranked Fresno State on Thursday. Carolina lost to second ranked Duke Friday afternoon, to set a 2-1 finish at the tournament that invited 16 of the nation's best teams.
The Tar Heels have the week off before returning to action next Saturday at home against Northwestern.
