COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - It's a good thing Sunday's women's soccer match between the Texas A&M Aggies and the defending champion North Carolina Tar Heels was postponed, otherwise the specatators may have had to swim to the field.
Severe thunderstorms and some flooding rocked parts of south and central Texas early Friday, continuing a nearly week-long wet spell for some areas. The National Weather Service has reported winds up to 60 MPH and accumulation of up to six inches of rain in some areas.
The match, originally slated to kick off at 2 p.m. CST Sunday afternoon, has been postponed due to unsafe playing conditions. As of now, head coaches G. Guerrieri of A&M and Anson Dorrance of UNC are working on rescheduling the game.
"The players and coaches are devastated that we will not get a chance to play the No. 1 team in the country," Guerrieri said. "We look forward to playing a great opponent like North Carolina in the future."
The Aggies' next scheduled match is Friday, September 7, against No. 9 Stanford, while the Heels take on Charlotte, also on Sept. 7, as part of the Carolina Nike Classic.
