CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Lindsay Stone and Kellie Thompson each scored four goals as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated James Madison, 14-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Fetzer Field.
With the win, the sixth-ranked Tar Heels improve to 8-4 this season. With the loss, 12th-ranked James Madison fell to 6-6. Carolina's win snaps a two-game losing streak to the Dukes, who had beaten UNC in the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Freshman Katelyn Hoffman made the first start of her collegiate career in goal for the Tar Heels and played very well for most of the game. Hoffman made six saves in the first half and finished with 10 for the game. Jennifer Corradini made nine saves and allowed all 14 UNC goals in the cage for the Dukes.
The two teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the game before the Tar Heels scored five straight in a span of 8:20 to take a 7-2 lead. Stone scored three goals in that five-goal spurt, with Thompson and Erin McInnes providing the other goals. UNC led, 8-3 at the break.
Carolina kept the pressure on early in the second half, scoring five goals in the first 7:50 of the period to take a 13-4 lead. JMU made a late rally, scoring five straight goals at one point to cut the UNC lead to 13-9 with 6:53 left.
The Tar Heel defense stiffened, however, and Nicole Foran added an insurance goal with 1:12 left to ice the victory.
Gail Decker ahd three goals for James Madison, while McNevin Molloy had a goal and two assists.
Carolina returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Nashville, Tenn., to play Vanderbilt at 1 p.m.
