LYNCHBURG, Va.-The University of North Carolina softball team provided highlights at the plate and in the field Wednesday at Liberty Softball Field, earning two shutout wins that included a pair of grand slams in the second game. The Tar Heels, now 26-16-1 on the season, beat the Lady Flames 4-0 in the opener and 12-0 in five innings in the second game.
Senior Radara McHugh earned the win in the first game, striking out six to improve to 16-9 on the season. Senior Beth Olen provided a two-RBI single to put UNC up in the sixth. The Tar Heels added two more runs in the seventh when freshman Natashalyn Snipes reached base on an error and scored on a triple by sophomore Quinn Porter. Porter then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Natalie Anter.
In the bottom of the doubleheader, the Tar Heels broke open a scoreless game with eight fourth-inning runs, including a grand slam by sophomore pitcher Michael Parrott and a three-run home run by Semmes. UNC scored four more runs in the fifth, all on a single swing of the bat by freshman Emily Price. The grand slam was the second career home run for Price. Parrott's was her second of the season and third of her career.
Semmes' homer was her third this season and the 15th of her career. She now ranks third on UNC's all-time home runs list, with her total surpassing the third-place mark of 14 by Beverly Smith, a Tar Heel standout from 1991-94 who is now an assistant coach for the team. Semmes also moved into a tie for third place on UNC's career RBI list with a total of 120.
Parrott struck out five Liberty batters and gave up two hits in improving to 10-7 on the season.
Next up for UNC is the continuation of a suspended Atlantic Coast Conference game against Virginia. The second game of a March 31 doubleheader was halted by rain and darkness after six scoreless innings and will be resumed on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Finley Field.
