BALTIMORE, MD. - Christine McPike had three goals and one assist to lead No. 4 North Carolina in a 12-10 win over No. 6 Loyola College Friday afternoon at Curley Field in women's lacrosse action. The Tar Heels improved to 3-1 on the season and in the process avenged a 7-5 loss to the Greyhounds suffered in the 2000 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse quarterfinals at Chapel Hill.
Loyola's Suzanne Eyler put the first mark on the board within 30 seconds of play. The Tar Heels respondedn with back to back goals from Betsy Gaines and Kellie Thompson. Eyler then scored her second goal of the game at 23:59 followed by a goal from Krissy Warnock 10 seconds later to give the Greyhounds their last lead of the match. North Carolina then took final control of the game with six more goals to Loyola's sole tally to end the half 8-4.
The Greyhounds (1-1) showed their resolve again early in the second half, but eventually they were no match for the Tar Heels. Stacey Morlang's 100th career-goal at 20:44 put the Greyhounds within a two goals at 9-7, but North Carolina fought back with three consecutive goals to increase the lead to five goals at 12-7. Loyola stayed competitive to the end, scoring three goals in the last eight minutes but it was too little too late.
North Carolina's Lindsay Stone and Kellie Thompson each had three goals. Erin McInnes added one goal and four assists. Melissa Coyne had 13 saves between the pipes.
Morlang had two goals and two assists to give her 101 career goals. Peck, Eyler and Testrake each finished with two goals. Tricia Dabrowski had 13 saves, including two on free-position shots.
Loyola returns to action Sunday facing No. 2 Princeton at the Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton, N.J. Carolina stays at Loyola to meet #9 Boston University on Sunday.
